Ron’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship has left a lasting legacy within the community.
Our dear friend and fellow club member, Ronald Keith Ritchie, passed away on January 11, 2026 at the age of 89.
His leadership and passion inspired countless individuals to actively participate in the preservation of local trails and landscapes. Ron was a dedicated member of the Dufferin Hi-Land Club, serving as Land Steward from 2002 to 2012. He grew up on a farm, which fostered his deep connection to and love for nature. During his tenure as Land Steward, Ron managed four properties: Pollock Property, Rock Hill Corner Property, Russell Property, and the Reginald Brett Property.
In 2003, with the support of the Tuesday Hike Group, of which he was a member, he planted 100 white cedars on the Pollock Property to help prevent erosion on one of the hillsides. Ron also played a key role in establishing interpretive signs at the Rock Hill Corner Property. He was a quiet, unassuming gentleman, known for his high standards of integrity and strong work ethic.
In addition to his role as Land Steward Director, Ron served for many years as a Trail Captain. He initially looked after the Main Trail from the 1st Line parking lot to the 2nd Line before transitioning to oversee the Primrose Loop and the Prince of Wales Side Trails, always with the perspective of a conservationist. Ron also conducted workshops to educate those interested in preserving and maintaining the landscape. His contributions to the DHL club and the time he dedicated are truly immeasurable.
The enduring influence of his efforts will undoubtedly inspire ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship within the community.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lyne, and his children, Jim, John, Kathleen, and Shirley Ann Ritchie (predeceased).
