First Annual Take a Hike for Headwaters
Saturday, June 3, 2017 marked the First Annual Take a Hike for Headwaters. This event providedparticipants with the choice of three richlyrewarding routes along the beautiful and rolling trails of the Dufferin-Hi-land section of the Bruce Trail. The Challenge (approx. 3 hours) The Intermediate (approx. 2 hours) and The Family (approx. 1 hour) The First Annual Take a Hike for Headwaters incorporates sections of private land opened up for this inaugural fundraising event. The goal of this hiking event is to raise funds to purchase vital medical equipment for Headwaters Health Care Centre, the hospital serving the residents of the Dufferin-Caledon region.
“Although we work to get the message out, the general public doesn’t realize that the government does not provide funding to hospitals for medical equipment,” explains the Foundation’s Annual Giving Manager, Nicole Hand. “These annual purchases are made through the donations of generous people in our community, which in part come from events just like this one.”
Hike starts will be staggered on the hour beginning at 8:30 am for the longest route, 9:30 am for the middle distance, and 10:30 am for the family hike. The hikes will be completed independently with participants expected to return to the start for lunch by approximately 11:30 am. Hikes will go rain or shine. This event is not appropriate for pets. Volunteers for the First Annual Hike for Headwaters will be stationed at pre-determined check points along the routes with water and snacks. Sweep teams will ensure no hiker is left behind.
The registration fee is $50 for adults (18 years +) and $25 for youth (5-17 years old), and children under 5 are free with an adult. Participants are strongly encouraged to collect pledges. Registered hikers will be provided with a link to their own personal fundraising page to share with family and friends. Hikers will be treated to “fuel-up” snacks, prizes and a post-hike lunch at the start/finish location, Lyric Pond (Mulmur). Maps will be provided to all hikers on the day of the event.
